Does Technology Affect Relationships?

Technology has no doubt become an extension of ourselves in everyday activity. Whether it is a text notification, Twitter buzz, or a quick glimpse to see what is next on your calendar, people are constantly looking at their phone. Now the real question is… How does this affect our relationships with one another? Is there a benefit to technology?

How to Use Your Cell Phone at the Table: A Guide | Houstonia MagazineWhen couples go out to dinner, it is common knowledge that each of them should put phones in pockets or purse, but what some people tend to do is set it on the table. Even just the sight of the phone can throw off the entire evening. Each time your partner looks at the phone to respond to a message, it is taken as a type of rejection. These little things may not seem important, but do they build up over time. Technology can also affect our friendships and relationships with family. The number of times I’ve heard someone over the age of 65 point out that “Young kids are always on their phones nowadays and no one can hold a conversation”, is uncountable. That can come across as a little harsh, but it is true in some instances. Phones at the dinner table with family gatherings have increased and my goodness would make my parents mad.

Video Resources - ZoomOn the contrary, with COVID-19 and being far from our network of friends and family, technology has never been more important. With over 200 million users, Zoom is helping friends stay in touch, students learn new materials, and companies conduct business. There are many more Face Video Call style networks out there and they have been used nonstop. This is why we appreciate technology. Your simple phone call to a loved one that is four or more hours away makes you feel a sense of anxiety lifted from your shoulders.

Would I say I depend on technology, absolutely. Would I say that I spend to much time on my phone or computer, maybe a little. But I always know when I need to put the technology down and spend intimate time with my family and friends because at the end of the day we do not know when the next time we will have that time together.
